Become a Coach
By learning how to become a coach, you can provide a positive experience for
others and for yourself.
Coaches represent many different roles to many different people. Coaches are
viewed as teachers, mentors, role models, friends, and as leaders in the
community in which they become involved. Coaches contribute to the community,
have an enormous effect on the development of our youth, and participate in a
great learning experience.
Good coaching is fundamental to community sport. By becoming a valued member of
the community, good coaches can share the positive aspects of an active
lifestyle. The role of a coach allows you to teach things such as teamwork,
character building, and the fundamental skills of rugby to participants who are
eager to learn.
Coaches can help to train any type of participant, from beginners to World Cup
Captains, and everyone in between.
The Brisbane Junior Rugby Union is affiliated with the Queensland Rugby Union
who in turn are part of the Australian Rugby Union. As a result, the Australian
Rugby Union coach accreditation program is a comprehensive training and
certification program based upon competency-based principles of education.
The ARU, in consultation with the Queensland Rugby Union is responsible for
course content and accreditation. Coaching programs can be divided into two
categories:
- Smart Rugby -
Smart Rugby is an injury prevention programme for referees, coaches and
players developed to prevent serious injuries through the application of good
technique.
- Accreditation Courses (2 year qualification)
- Level One -
The Level 1 "course" of previous years has now been superceded by the mandatory
SmartRugby, which is the ARU's occupational health & safety program, as part of
a "Foundation" course - a certificate course which provides a basic structure
for coaching & officiating. It is recommended that individuals who wish to gain
ASC accreditation attend a Foundation Course. All accreditation lasts for
4 years and all coaches must maintain their SmartRugby qualification every 2
years
- Foundation Course
- (Entry level course for coaches and referees involved in U13 - Seniors. The
course focuses on laws, technical skills/drills and effective coaching and
refereeing practice. SmartRugby is included in this course)
- Level Two -
(Intermediate level course focusing on developing a coach's tactical knowledge
of the game)
- Level Three
- (ARU coaching program designed for coaches involved at the premier
level/representative level)
-
Certificate Courses (non-accredited);
Accreditation courses are registered with the Australian Sports Commission and
coaches have a 'licence' for four (4) years. After that time the coach must
either re-accredit or complete a higher level of coaching accreditation.
