OUR STORY

Brisbane Junior Rugby Union's journey began in 1960, when junior rugby in Queensland moved beyond schoolyards and into club organised competition. What started as informal games quickly grew into a structured and thriving community.

As the game expanded across Brisbane, a dedicated Competition Committee was formed to manage fixtures, rules and club collaboration - laying the groundwork for what BJRU is today.

GROWING THE GAME

Through the 1980s and 90s, the competition evolved rapidly. Clear competition rules were introduced, and innovative systems - led by pioneers like Rob Melloy - helped modernise player registration, scheduling and results.

At the same time, the Brisbane competition continued to grow in size, strength and identity.

BECOMING BJRU

In 1999, Brisbane clubs took steps towards independence, working to establish their own governing body. After several years of development, Brisbane Junior Rugby Union officially became autonomous in 2003.

On 21 February 2004, BJRU was formally established, welcoming 19 clubs and beginning a new chapter for junior rugby union in Brisbane.

BUILT BY PASSIONATE PEOPLE

The formation of BJRU was driven by dedicated volunteers, with key contributions from Des Drice, Rob Melloy and Karl Shrubsole, alongside the inaugural committee led by President Ron Warren.

Their vision created a strong foundation that continues today.

INNOVATION AND IMPACT

BRJU has always looked forward with the mission of helping shape junior rugby through:

  • Improved competition rules and standards

  • A successful referee voucher system

  • The introduction of Under 6 "Walla" rugby

  • Development pathways

These initiatives have strengthened the game for players, coaches, referees and clubs alike.

TODAY

From its early beginnings to a competition of thousands, BJRU remains committed to growing the game and creating positive experiences for every young rugby player.
